How Crafting Benefits Our Brains
by JWG Member, Barbara D-
I made an exciting discovery during my morning reading (and YouTube watching). “Making” significantly decreases the risk of cognitive impairment as we age. Or so says research out of the Mayo Clinic and reported by a very engaging YouTube needleworker. Her channel is named
Creative Conversations: Snapdragon Life www.youtube.com/@snapdragonlife
But wait there is more: Making that uses both hands that also cross the midline provides even more benefits. IÕll add my own two cents here: Research continues to support more complex activities as being more cognitively beneficial. That means I need to bump it up from my very basic “under-over” rigid heddle projects to trying my hand at Navajo weaving. Ouch! I'll let you know when that happens!
So it sounds like the research recommends the very movements most of us are already doing when we weave, knit, felt, dye, and sew, etc. I personally think this provides a firm scientific basis for a lot more “making” and a lot less of the daily activities we donÕt enjoy. Knitting is far more beneficial than unloading the dishwasher, right? I'm looking for all the cognitive boost I can find! Go see for yourself and enjoy Snapdragon's YouTube discussion about this research . She also provides the research citations if you are so inclined.
